Certification Examination

After reviewing your fully-documented cases, the examination panel will select a time for your Certification Exam— an oral case discussion lasting about an hour in which we will ask questions about your cases and your work.  Be prepared to answer questions not only about your surgical work, but also questions that are medically relevant to the pathology and the labs/imaging studies/pathology, and any other relevant questions to the case or the pathology being treated.  You may also be asked about differential diagnoses, different procedure options, and classification systems, etc that might be relevant to each case.

Once you pass this portion of the examination process, you will be board certified by ABLES for 5 years.  Then you will be required to go through re-certification.
